At long last Damian finally managed a Saabing appearance! We arrived Saturday morning to be met with a warm welcome from the hosting Cheshire, Staffs and North Shrops branch. Ma and I drove off to investigate a few of the nearby villages so we missed most of Saturday’s activities but we were back in plenty of time for dinner and an excellent evening of entertainment courtesy of the Abba Girls who sang their boots off and eventually coaxed a good showing of Saabers onto the dancefloor!
On Sunday morning it was time for the car show: disaster struck! Having packed for every possible contingency, the one thing I hadn’t reckoned with was overnight showers! Damian was soaked and I HAD NO CHAMMY!!! Necessity being the mother of invention as they say I managed to busk it by using a pack of napkins; you can’t keep a determined Saaber down!Damian struck again by developing an embarrassing splutter whilst being lined up for judging and insisted on a last minute dash to a petrol station for a gargle with the over priced amber nectar. We made more new friends padding about discussing the merits of each Saab, although it was difficult to choose an overall winner. Sunday rounded off with another driver challenge organised by West Midlands and Warwickshire group; an opportunity for a controlled zonk round some cones and a spot of under pressure parking. Plenty of contenders again but prior to my leaving halfway through the contest there were NO WOMEN ENTRANTS! Come on girls, the lads are more than prepared to let us play, even I would have had a bash if Damian hadn’t been so overloaded with “necessities!” All in all we had a great weekend: one small grumble, there could have been a few more activities, the stalls were a little thin on the ground and WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BELGIAN CHOCOLATE STAND?
The next Sunday Damian and I headed for the Trentham Gardens car show to give our support to the Cheshire and West Midlands groups who were flying the Saab flag. Attendance was a bit thin, come on you lot, bring out your Saabs! On the 19th August Damian is at Tatton lending his wheels to the Saab stand, maybe I’ll see some of my new Saabing friends from the National and I really hope it doesn’t rain again, I’m not made of napkins!
